AOL doing things I think many people should be doing….I am serious! I really think what AOL is doing is very smart and I think many other platforms should be following the model!

What? No AOL shout-out for us at Urlesque? JK, but yes — larger “portal” sites creating niche blog networks is not exactly new, but finally getting stronger exposure with start-ups scrambling to monetize in the current economy and the ever-popular “being really great at not making money” dig picking up steam among critics….
Either way, here’s a fun story: I recall being at a private “industry” party a few months back explaining to the head of a once buzz-heavy start-up that I worked for AOL — specifically one of their blogs. He quickly laughed, “so like you work for a dial up service?” Flash forward to now: his company folded and in his newly humbled state he no longer dresses like a walking American Apparel cokehead, and here we are every few days reading about the hipness of AOL’s niche-blog approach.
I do love the karmic retribution of the web — weeding out those who are passionate about their hype from those who are passionate about their work.
